(Nice, Feb.16,1861)

You have received Johnny's portraits? Aren't they nice little pictures?

Both the children are learning to read. - French, however, because their nurse is a Swiss woman whose language is French. But the letters are the same, and if they can read in French, they will soon be able to read English. They rather like the amusement, thus far.

The cherry trees are in blossom here, and in some instances the fruit is formed. We have had no winter, in the American sense of the term, and the children have been able to spend three or four hours in the garden every day, excepting when it has rained,- which has not been very often the case. Mary sends much love to you and Pa and all.

Most affectionately yrs,

F. W. Sargent
