I am sorry to decline painting so distinguished a person as Mr. Wilcos, supported by such an advocate as yourself and the committee you mention, but painting portraits has become a nightmare to me and there is nothing to do but to keep out of it. Please convey my sincere regret and explain, if necessary, that I am a pack of nerves and too old to do a good portrait. *******
