FEDERAL ART SHOW OPENS

Artists Guest of Honor at Gallery Program:

John Sloan, Max Weber, Sam Lewisohn and Lloyd L. Rollins were guests of honor at the opening yesterday of an exhibition of the easel painting division of the Federal Art Project at the Federal Art Gallery, 255 W. 57 St. Sixty-five oil paintings and thirty- water colors by Federal project artists were hung in the display, which will be continued to May 11th.

Among the Artists represented are Alfred Mira, Joseph Pandolfini, Marc Perper, Gregorio Prestopini, Walter Quirt, Miron Sokole, Lawrence Steinfeld, Joseph Stolla, Vincent Campanelle, Sterling Blazy, Alexander Dobkin, Louis Guglielmi, Henry Kallem, Israel Kantor, Sidney Laufman, Eugene McCown, Jackson Pollock, Perkins Harnly and Elizabeth Terrell.

Banjamin Knotts is head of the easel division and Lucile Blanch is assistant.

Work Attain High Average, but Somewhat Lacking in the Old Kick

Things have greatly changed in the American art scene during the last three years I am prompted to observe upon seeing the current easel painting and water-color exhibition at the Federal Art Gallery.

Three years ago the project resounded with the stir of young artists shaking the composure of their elders and better with a rude challenge to reigning attitudes.

Since then there has been gradual settling process, partly the outcome of the need to round out raw young work, partly response to the subtle ressure during the recovery period for acceptable painting.
