The present show is an outgrowth of a retrospective exhibition with the same title held in 1979 at The William Benton Museum of Art at The University of Connecticut. Motherwell's use of black - a color which has long been his artistic touchstone - ranges from epic oil paintings, in which black dominates the canvas in full resonance, to intimate works where "the stillness of blackness" takes on a more poetic tone. This show also celebrates the publication of Robert Motherwell & Black, edited by Stephanie Terenzio.
