July 9, 1908

Thursday morning we started again and passed through Bideford the town Westward Ho is written about. Both days we were surrounded by showers, but we seemed to to be favored by a special providence, for the sky over our heads was magnificent, which added to the beautiful scenery. 

Lyton is in the midst of the Lorna Doone country and when the coach entered it, we were spellbound with its beauty.

The coach reaching it's destination we left our luggage in the driver's care for the time being and went to get lunch at a pretty little tea-room before hunting up lodgings.

After lunch we were unsuccessful in lodgings for they were all full, so that we were obliged to go to a hotel. the hotel has a wonderful view and there are several subjects Gifford can sketch from our windows of our room and so we are contented.
