over head there was a large rolling sky, as we saw it. It all looked like a magnificent painting.

July 13, 1908

Monday morning we took our lunch and went to Ley Abby to sketch. No sooner had we reached there, than a shower came up. We went under some trees whose foliage was so thick they gave us a perfect shelter. The shower was soon over and we spent a lovely day in the open air.

July 14, 1908

Tuesday we drove over the beautiful moors with their rich coloring to Doone Valley to spend the day. We saw the tree the Doones hung Ridd on and the old Ridd farm house and went inside their church. Built in the plaster of the wall is a curious head of a monk leaning on his hands looking back of a pew. There we walked through the valley where the Doones are supposed to have lived and saw the water slide John Ridd climbed and Lorna's Bower.
