All the fruit and vegetables used, in the house and the flowers used for decorative purposes are raised in the huge kitchen gardens near the stables. Half of the things are raised in hot houses. It is a beautiful garden, full of beds of old fashioned flowers and the high red brick walls are covered with fruit vines. There is a long arbor of apple and pear vines that must be lovely when the blossoms are blooming. The park around the house is beautiful and one part is full of tame deer. At the foot of the house gardens is an artificial lake three miles long with swans, duck and Egyptian geese. The roof of the house and chapel are of bronze tiles. We were not taken through these two buildings, but were shown the underground picture gallery and the ball room where the family portraits are. After looking at a portrait and a bust of the late Duke I concluded that he must have been a very fine gentleman. The kitchen is detached from the house and the food is taken underground in cars on rails to the dinning room.
