Early in the afternoon the steam yacht started for Loen and reached there that evening about nine o'clock.

August 22, 1908.

There are several glaciers about Loen and Saturday we set off to see one. After leaving the yacht we drove a few miles to a lake, then crossing to the other end, walked three miles. The frozen river comes right down to the valley. The color of the ice is like the blue of the sky by twilight. The ice is piled up a the bottom and the running water has worn caves in it. Close by it looks like an ice palace on the stage, but at a short distance, where the whole length of the glacier can be seen, it is very effective.

At this side of the lake we had lunch and the waitresses wore their peasant costumes.

We arrived back rather late to the steamer and did not get underway again
