painting of the Modern German School, that was the sight to see. There is nothing individual about it, for hundreds are painted like it every year. The church itself is exceedingly plain and there is nothing to see about the town.

August 26, 1908.

 - Late Wednesday morning the yacht entered Bergen harbor once more.

After lunch we landed and drove about the town. The residential part is quite pretty. Some of the houses are of Pompeiian and other foreign styles. Then we went to St. Maria, an old stone church. The interior is massive and simple and on entering the dampness strikes you very unpleasantly. The pulpit and altar are of heavy German design and quite out of keeping with the rest of the church.

One of the quays of Bergen was held by a league of German merchants, who cheated the Norwegians on every hand. We went to see one of the ware houses that has been left practically
