From the parapet, there, is a splendid view of the town and the surrounding country. On one side you can see across the Eden over the border into Scotland. 

From the Castle we went to the Cathedral for evening service. The Cathedral is built of brownstone and has very pretty stain glass windows, but is rather small and gives the impression of a parish. The service was well attended and was very warm and pleasant.

Right after lunch we started for the English Lakes intending to stop at Windermere. The country we passed through is beautiful, but then this part of England is supposed to be the finest. In the foreground are fields sloping into pretty valleys, while in the background are softly rolling hills covered with purple heather.
