In the morning we walked down to the Lake to row up to Ambleside, but found that it was too windy and so we had to give it up.

During the afternoon we took a very pretty walk in sight of the Lake and stopped in to see the little, old church of St. Mary's. In the church yard is the stump of an old tree with ivy growing up through the trunk and out of the knotches, covering it in a leafy mass, probably killing the tree. The churches in Windermere are the prettiest I have seen in England.

This morning we made an excursion by steamboat to Ambleside which lies at one end of the Lake. It is a long, narrow lake of about ten miles, dotted here and there with islands. One island contains some graves, which seems a very inapropriate spot. We enjoyed the scenery very much, which reminded us of parts of our own Hudson River.
