My dear Crouch,

I may have trouble with my sister. I am informed I have received valuable property from my mother's estate, to wit, paintings, &c. - I think I handed you a paper I had my mother write stating the pictures were mine and loaned to them. Will you see if you have it? Of course the sketches were mine, but if the lady can cause me any annoyance, she will do so- I hardly think her lawyer will allow her to do anything so foolish-as through them I recently offered to take care of her-pay her board &c-but only in a place satisfactory to me & not in N. Y. I think she is crazy.

Well I am here on my second attempt at a vacation-the first time I got as far as Charleston and had to come back & testify for Evans in the famous suit. I am here looking over the ground for next season & am returning to Charleston to visit my friend Stanley who has taken a house there for the winter &c & where I expect to put in a satisfactory couple of weeks.

Was down to Noank before I left N. Y. & it looked fine. I hope next year will see a delegation from S. down there. How's Loomis-give the boys my regards & I am the same as ever-enjoyed seeing Cantwell in N. Y. very much. Was glad he got the trip. Drop me a line at % [[c/o]] W. Stanley, 9 E. Battery, Charleston, S. C.
Truly,
H. W. Ranger.
