wonderfully well, but I have had no very recent news of the family in York, though John wrote me a peach of a letter a few weeks ago. He always gives me all the news, though he doesn't write very often.

I am so elated over the War news. There is no danger now that Stephen will ever have to go. I often wonder how he is getting along at Hill. The Whitneys & Loretta Hardy who frequently walk with me over these hills, inquire about him often. They seem very fond of him. Tell him to be sure & send them a Xmas card. It would please them that he remembers them. People continue to inquire about you. You made a fine impression on everyone who met you & I am very proud of you. Tell Virginia that Emily adores wearing that black plush Tam 'o shanter, & prefers it to all her other head-gear. & Jane hung on to that straw hat she left behind until it looked so tough it was fit for only the Red Cross Salvadge [[salvage]]. Isn't it funny how they love to wear something that belonged to someone they are fond of.

By the way, when Va. outgrows that white Jersey dress, don't hand it over to the R.C. boxes, give it to me & I will have it dyed for Emily. But you can have it made with a much longer waist, & lengthen it that way, because a longer waist is just as stylish. I bought some Jersey lately, so I could
