with the lady referred to unbeknown to me and it appears that after the colored people had mawled quite a quantity of rails -- that the tenant that Miss Amanda Speaks of (Eli Briggs (cold)) misrepresented to Miss Amanda the amount of work performed by the Withers party.  These people would not have left the premises of Miss Hally if she had been able to furnish them a house.  They were obliged to remain in town and hire a house and did not receive any provisions from Miss H. with the exception of 5 loads of wood which was a part of the agreement between them.  It will appear from the sworn statement of Mr A.D. Pollock in whose employ these people have been since the ill treatment received by them from Miss H. that their deportment & industry is of an unexceptional character, to my certain knowledge it is every word true -  This woman with all her pretentions of respect for the constitution & the laws" &c is by no means a person of whom any one in this section of the country have the slightest regard She enjoys the sobriquet "of a "Blockade runner" & it is said by her neighbours that she catered to both sides & made money -  I took her statement & she sent her two tenants Eli Briggs and William Ray to me to substantiate
