Personally appeared before me Thomas Stokes (col'd) who being duly sworn deposes and says:

That on the evening of the 13th inst Thomas Hampton, Ben Hampton and - Bonds came to his house heavily armed - that Thos Hampton levelled his gun towards him to shoot him, but that the cap did not explode, and that on this account his life was saved - that they then left, threatening to kill him and his family some other time - that they said they were a going to kill every colored man, and that "slacken grants ropes". That he had to leave in consequence of these threats, and is now in Nashville trying to get protection. That he lives 18 miles from Nashville at Bakers Station.
