Before me personally appeared the undersigned Alexander Mitcheler and being duly sworn deposes as follows.

My name is Alexander Mitcheler. I live in the city of Memphis Tenn. On the evening of the 1st of May 1866 I saw John Creighton Recorder, mounted on horseback and a crowd of men around him. He was making a speech to them. He said "boys. I want you to go ahead and kill the last damn one of the niggers race and burn up the cradle" the crowd applauded.

Creighton continued "God damn they are free, free indeed but God damn them, we will kill and drive the last one of them out of the City." The men were all unanimous in hollarring hurrah for John Creighton, they drove me away by pistols and I did not hear him finish his speech. That night some men set fire to my house but I succeeded in putting it out by the help of some other colored people. We were fired on all the time we were trying to stop the fire. One man Major Jones was wounded in my house.
