Personally appeared before me the undersigned Fred A. Meyers who upon being duly sworn testifies as follows.

My name is Fred A. Meyers. I reside at the French Restaurant on 2nd St between Court & Jefferson Sts. On the 1st day of May 1866 I left my residence to see what was the matter. When I arrived at the corner of Monroe & 2nd Sts I saw the sheriff Patrick Winters, who was enrolling men to go for guns to suppress the riot. I was enrolled and ordered to go get a gun. I did not get any but went to South Memphis, saw two men beat a negro, heard quite a number of shots fired. On Vance & Causey Sts the Sheriff made a speech did not hear it. Then Recorder Creighton made a speech to this effect "That every one of the citizens should get arms, organize & go through the negro districts and that he was in favor of killing every "God damned nigger" At that time a number of regular troops made their appearance and passed along Causey St, when I saw a citizen take a negro out of a yard and shoot him in
