Before me personally appeared the undersigned Jordan Buford who upon being duly sworn deposes as follows,

My name is Jordan Buford  I live on DeSoto Street near No 7 Engine House in the City of Memphis Tenn.  On the night of the 1st day of May 1866 I was returning from my work  I had been employed by a Mr. Bottoni at the Elmwood Cemetery.  I had just finished working for him and had been paid off.

When near my house I was stopped by the police, who demanded my carpet sack containing my clothes and $50.00 in money one of them struck me on the head with his club they asked me if I had been a soldier.  I got away from then as soon as I could.
