Before me personally appeared the undersigned Shedrick Smith and being duly sworn deposes as follows.

My name is Shedrick Smith.  I live in the City of Memphis Tenn. in that portion called Chelsea corner of Fourth and Mills Sts.  On the night of the 1st of May 1866 as I was coming from a Drug Store where I had been after medicine for a Sick Child [[strikethrough]]I met a[[/strikethrough]] met a number of men on Marie St. One asked me for a chew of Tobacco I told him I had none would like to accommodate him if I had. One said he would take what I did have and caught me around the waist and arms.  Another choked me while a third robbed me of my money $30.00 they beat me outrageously.  My Doctor bill has cost me $40.00.  Several of them were Policemen. Mr. W. H. Reilly  keeper of the Station house came up at the time and stopped them. I could identify one of the men.
