Personally appeared before me a Justice of the peace for the State of County aforesaid, Austin Porter col'd. who being duly sworn according to law says, That he lives at Zil Smiths Plantation on the Pulaski Pike five miles from Columbia, That on the night (about 8 oclock) of the 24th inst his house was surrounded by an armed mounted and disguised body of men bearing a flag with the name of "KuKlux" thereon. they demanded admittance, were let in when they asked many questions and began a search, they said, for pistols during which time they broke the furniture of the house. That they then inquired the way to Mt Pleasant and got Austin's oldest boy "Altemo" to show them the road, after the boy went out doors he was beaten by them until nearly dead and was brought into the house bleeding from several wounds.

Sworn and subscribed to before me this 25th day of January 1868..
