Before me personally appeared this day Nathan Roney, and having been duly sworn deposes and says.

My name is Nathan Roney. I live in Mitchellville. On or about the 1st of September 1866, I was living at Mr. Barrett's about a mile from Mitchelville Two men came riding to my house, they called me out about 9 oclock in the night, when they ordered me out of the front door. I leaped out of the back door of the house because I knew they wanted to hurt me. I said it was George Martin and Leroy Gowans a yellow man. I ran into the brush beside my house. I heard my wife ask them if they meant to kill me, and I heard them answer yes we will do for the God-damn nigger. That damned rascal Roney we will kill the first time we meet him on the road. I think they did it because I took my wife from there.

When I leaped out of the house they shot at me six times, one shot taking effect in the arm.
