If Chas. were now with you I would not trouble you with this letter. But I wish to say in this unofficial manner that the visit of Gen. Sewall, has been of great service to me. He has made a very rigid inspection of the principal points, has called my attention to some defects which I had not time to look up, and has encouraged the officers whom he found faithful. Such an inspection once in three months, would do us all good.

Another visit has been of a different character, but perhaps it is not best for me to write about it even in confidence. It is easy to discover faults in such complicated operations as we are carrying on. It is easy to  find
