Before me personally appeared the undersigned Columbus Riley and being duly sworn deposes as follows.

My Name is Columbus Riley  I live in the City of Memphis Tenn on the night of the 2" day of May 1866 a party of men set my house on fire and burned it down, with all its contents. I heard the men say come on Roach before they got to the house but could not tell who any of them were. After they set the house on fire they fired five or six shots into it to Keep me from coming out but I made my escape with my wife who was in the family way. and the fright she received caused her to Miscarry she being enciente - (Wm Glassly & Cooper white men owned the house) - they the (rioters) told her to go in the house they would not hurt her but would Kill Cooper and Glassly if they found them - they (Cooper & Glassly) were teachers of Col'd Schools. the portion of the house I lived in was all that was burned of it  My loss would amount to $75.00 I also lost my discharge papers from the army.
