Before me personally appeared the undersigned Houston Savage who upon being duly sworn deposes as follows.

My name is Houston Savage I live in the City of Memphis Tenn near the cor of Gayoso & DeSoto Sts. on the night of the 3" day of May 1866 while a fire was burning in the vicinity of where I lived and endangering the house I [[strikethrough]] lived [[/strikethrough]] was stopping in, I tried to get my household goods out of danger and had got my Bureau in the street when a fireman whom I do not know came up and demanded the keys.  Not having them with me at the time, I was unable to comply with his request and he broke open the drawers and took therefrom clothing belonging to myself and my wife amounting to over $100.00 in value, and $120.00 in greenbacks.  when I remonstrated with him he drew his revolver and threatened to shoot me if I did not leave and go into the house.
