Before me personally appeared the undersigned Lewis Bennett and being duly sworn deposed as follows
My name is Lewis Bennett I live in the city of Memphis Tenn on the evening of the 2nd day of May 1866 as I was coming from the levee I met several white men. they asked me if I had been a soldier. I answered yes. one of them said he believed I was a "dam smoked yankee". he then struck me in the arm with a club and broke it (my arm) another struck me on the head with a club and knocked me down, and they beat me on the face unmercifully they robbed me of $50.00 in money and a watch worth $70.00
