Before me personally appeared the undersigned Clay Johnson and being duly sworn deposes as follows
My name is Clay Johnson  I live in the city of Memphis Tenn on the night of the 1st of May 1866 I was stopping at the house of my nephew. Cory Campbell who was living a few yards from me - one policeman and four citizens came to his house that night on a plea of searching for fire arms and while there robbed the house of some of the articles. the policeman stood at the foot of the bed with his club in his hand. while the men searched the house and stole the articles. the next day May 2nd 1866 a party of men came back and had with them three white women. the men told these women to help themselves to whatever they wanted and the men and women took away with them most of the valuable articles in the house

On the night of the 2nd day of May 1866 they burned my husbands house and all its contents my loss  amounts to
