Miss & Tenn R.R. Depot - I saw the body of a dead negro whom Henry Taylor said he saw killed - I was in the vicinity sometime U.S. Soldiers were placed as guards around the negro quarters at about 11 o.c. P.M. Rev'd Mr. Peace and myself went down Vance Street and when we got near Hernando I saw five or six men standing standing near the fence on the street we were on - the negro School house near Grace church on Hernando Street had just been set on fire. We then proceeded in the direction of Echols Streets and saw another School house and Church on fire, then came back and found a building on Hernando Street on fire Saw the city Recorder John. C. Crighton & Sheriff Winters there with a crowd of "rowdies" armed with shotguns pistols &c the majority seemed to exult at the burning - leaving Hernando Street we came up to Vance after which I went to my house about 11:45 P.M. I again walked down Main St. when I met two of Sheriff Winters "posse" armed with Shotguns, they halted me between Main & Shelby Streets and one of them named Cain knew me, they asked me who I was - I engaged in conversation with them and deprecated the burning. Cain said every nigger shanty in the city should be burned and all the niggers cleared out -
While talking I saw a crowd coming up Vance Street and I went with them
