Before me personally appeared the undersigned and being duly sworn deposes as follows:

My name is Walton Wright, I live in the City of Memphis, corner Broadway and Raybourne Avenue. On the 3d of May 1866 when the shooting commenced I and another boy [[strikethrough]] namsed [[/strikethrough]] named Mitchel, was attracted by the firing and started in that direction from whence it proceeded, as I reached Causey Street bridge, I saw a Policeman shoot a negro who was not doing any thing; they (the police) then went down South Street and shot another black man who was walking quietly along - they then took a horse belonging to another black man and beat the owner on the head with their pistoles and clubs - the black man was perfectly quiet. When I got to Main Street I met a black boy 14 or 15 years of age shot in the hip. One of the police was a large fleshy man I would know him if I saw him
