Deposition of T.T. Hallowell Mayor of Goldsboro

On Monday the 4th day of June 1866 about noon I ordered the arrest of Bryant Langston, Freedman, for drunken and disorderly conduct, viz. threatening language, which was a violation of Ordinance 6th. in the attempt to arrest him he drew his knife and stabbed the policeman, whereupon he (the policeman) shot him. 

For a violation of the above named ordinance the police have the authority to arrest the offender and lock him up without any written order until day Office hours.
