February 10, 1945

Dear Andrew:

An informal committee has been formed here to recommend to Governor Dewey and the State Legislature an appropriation of funds for the purchase of works of art from New York state artists taking the place to some extent of federal funds of the pre-war period.

The committee felt very strongly that you should be asked to be a member and I was commissioned to extend an invitation to you believing not only in your personal value to the committee but also that Buffalo should be represented.

The committee so far comprises Juliana Force, Elizabeth Olds, Katherine Schmidt (Secretary), Francis Taylor, James Soby, Lloyd Goodrich, Holger Cahill and myself.

I enclose a brief statement of the origins and purposes of the committee and a copy of the bill which has been drawn up by Irvine Shubert.

Francis Taylor is brining [[bringing]] the bill before the Metropolitan Museum lawyers for their examination and advice. Our Trustees have not yet committed the Museum as an institution but have approved Jim Soby's and my membership [[strikethrough]] on [[/strikethrough]] the committee.

There will be a meeting of the committee on Tuesday, February 13, about 8:30 at Mrs. Force' apartment, 42 West 9 Street. Probably you will not be able to attend, but I am asking Miss Schmidt to keep you informed of what develops.

Let me say that all the members of the committee are enthusiastic about the plan and hope for your participation.

Sincerely,

Mr. Andrew C. Ritchie, Director
