MY MOST GRACIOUS DOROTHY MILLER

HOW WAS YOUR TRIP TO VENICE AND THE ADRIATIC COAST? I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THE SUN AND RESTED. I AM WRITING YOU FROM KASSEL. I HAVE BEEN HERE SINCE THE SECOND OF MAY INVOLVED WITH MY SCULPTURE PROJECT FOR DOCUMENTA.

MY PROJECT HERE I HOPE IT WILL BE AMONG MY LIFE'S BEST WORKS. A FORME MADE FROM LIGHT 15 FEET HIGHT AND REPEATED MANY TIMES, MADE FROM A PLEXIGLAS TUBE 20 C.M. DIAMETER OR 8 INCES WHICH is BY ITSELF FANTASTIC.

I AM THE ONLY ARTIST HERE AT THE MOMENT. PROF. BODE THE ORGANIZER OF DOCUMENTA IS VERY INSPIRING. I LEARN A GREAT DEAL FROM HIM. MY SCULPTURE PROJECT WILL BE EXHIBITED AT A LARGE ROOM IN THE ANCIENT GALLERY.

I LEFT THE PACE GALLERY. AS YOU KNOW, STANDING BY THE SIDE OF ART AND ARTIST YOUR ENTIRE LIFE, THERE ARE ALLWAYS COMPLAINS FROM ALL ENDS IN THE GALLERY SITUATION.

TRULLY I FELT STRONGLY THAT THE PACE BOYS BEGAN TO SIZE MY TALENT ALMOST DISAPROOVING OF MY SUCCES.

DURING MY SHOW THEY DID SELL ENOUGH TO COVER THE MONEY THEY HAD ADVANCE ME. BUT THEY DID NOT TRY ANY HARDER AFTER THEY COVER THIS SUM.

SO THERE I WAS LEFT IN THE UPTOWN NEW YORK STREETS DEPRESSED. FORTUNETELLY A GOOD THING HAPPENED. A FRIEND MR MELLER BRAUGHT A TEXAN FROM ABROAD MR MC ALPIN WHO BOUHT FROM MY STUDIO SEVERAL OF MY SCULPTURES AND DRAWINGS.

BUT I LEFT NEW YORK FOR KASSEL TIRED AND WITH BROKEN FAITH.

I ALSO DO NOT REGRET MY WITHDRAWAL FROM THE WHITNEY MUSEUM EXHIBIT.

NATURALLY I FELT I WANTED TO HAVE AN EXHIBIT SHOWING MY WHOLE DEVELOPMENT.

IN MY FOURTEEN YEARS IN NEW YORK I WAS BLESSED WITH YOUR INTEREST IN MY WORK AND MYSELF.

I SHOULD ALSO PROBABLY MENTION HERE HOW GOOD IT WAS THAT MR AND MRS LIST PURCHASED MY LARGE "GATES" I ALSO ENJOYED VERY MUCH MY RECENT EXHIBIT AT HARVARD UNIVERSITY. THE ENTHOUSIASM OF THE STUDENTS AND THE PURE CLEAR AIR, NO POLITICS THAT is WHAT IT WAS, MADE ME FEEL SOME JOY.
