Mr. Leslie Judd Ahlander,
Curator of Contemporary Art,
John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art,
P.O. Box 1838,
Sarasota, Florida.

Dear Mr. Ahlander,

Thank you for your letter of 4th January. Mrs. McCauley had written me from Mexico, where she is detained because of illness in the family, telling me that you would be getting in touch with me.

I am delighted that you would like to add Cornelia Chapin's Snail to your collection, since she knew your Museum and admired it enormously, and naturally would be very happy to be represented there. The value $2,500 was placed on it some time ago for Insurance purposes and I think does not reflect its real true value. I would think $3,500 would be more realistic, However as it is to be a gift, its value is not too important except as a tax deductible for me as donor, and my greatest concern is to place the snail where it can be seen and appreciated in ideal surroundings-and you have them!

I do not know if Mrs. McCauley explained to you that I am not able to pay for transport. As you can imagine the total cost of transporting the various pieces is considerable and quite beyond my resources.

With my grateful thanks,
Very sincerely,

Marion Sanford.
