Resident of Clayton
Beloved father of Heidi and David Ardini, passed on May 16, 2007 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Jim Ardini began his life in Boston, MA and as a child moved to Trinidad for a period of time during WWII. He later attended Boston Latin School with the assistance of numerous scholarships at Boston College. In 1985, Jim joined the U.S. Navy by enlisting in the Officer training School; soon after he was one of a few to be selected by Admiral Rickover to help establish the Nuclear Training Institute (aka Nuclear Power School) on Mare Island, CA. As a member of the commissioning staff he taught Nuclear Physics until he was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant Commander from active duty in 1964. Jim continued to serve in the Naval Reserves until 1975. From that time on Jim never left the San Francisco Bay Area.
Jim furthered his education by earning a Master's degree in Physics, while working, and began his long and dedicated college teaching career. During his tenure, Jim earned many awards and saw many achievements including publishing in peer review journals both domestically and internationally. He was presented with an International Award for Teaching, sat on a televised panel on history for PBS, and held the position of Chair of Physics at a local college. In the true spirit of a real scholar, Jim always welcomed a discussion and lively debate on his subjects of passion; physics, history, philosophy, technology, and domestic/international politics.
Jim will be missed for his sense of humor, willingness to reach out and provide emotional support, and his ability to motivate one to expand the limits of his or her critical thinking. He was a mentor to so many and was always there to help and give himself.
Jim is survived by his two children, Heidi and David; three grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Carolina, and Peter, his two sisters Betty and Laura and their families; his dog Ginger; in addition to cousins, friends, colleagues and students who all loved him so dearly.

Roy DeForest
Resident of Port Costa

Roy DeForest, one of the most important artists of his generation, died Friday following a brief illness. He was 77. "Roy was a man with a good and great sense of irony," recalled Wayne Thiebaud, a professor emeritus at UC Davis and longtime friend and colleague. "He was not interested in any kind of preciousness, prestige or any of that nonsense. He pursued his work with real genuineness, regardless of what others thought." DeForest was born in 1930 in North Platte, Neb., the son of migrant farm workers. He grew up in Nebraska, Colorado and eastern Washington state. He attended the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco and earned bachelor's and master's degrees in art at San Francisco State University.

DeForest and his wife, Gloria, lived in Port Costa, Calif., on land populated by cattle, birds and the dogs that inspired so much of his art.

In addition to his wife, DeForest is survived by a daughter, Oriana, and a son, Pascal, both of Concord, Calif., and his sisters, Beth Jacobs of San Leandro, Beverly Lagiss of Livermore and Lynn Robie of Sacramento.

The family requests that remembrances be directed to the UC Davis Foundation/Roy DeForest Memorial Fund, and mailed to Department of Art, University of California, One Shields Ave., Davis, Ca. 95616, or to the art program at: The Center for Adaptive Learning, 3227 Clayton Rd, Concord, Ca 94519
