Roy DeForest, an artist known for his outrageous wit and artistic irreverence, was a founding member of the so-called California Funk art movement. He never much cared for the name.

That's something his friends and admirers might talk about during a celebration of his life at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Center for Contemporary Art, Sacramento (1519 19th St.)

The open-microphone event will feature an exhibit of DeForest's art.

DeForest, a world -renowned artist and educator, taught at the University of California, Davis, for nearly 30 years. He died May 18 at age 77.

His work is in the collections of such institution as the October Art Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Oakland Museum.
