FEITELSON ON ART : New Series, "ART OF THE 20TH CENTURY"

#4 - Sunday, April 24th - "FAUVISM"

Fauvism was the first important art movement of the 20th century. The first Fauve exhibition was seen at the Salon D'Automne in 1905; bold use of shockingly pure color and emotionally composed line caused a scandal in the art world, and the epithet "fauve", or "wild beast", was applied to the painters, including Henri Matisse, the "ringleader", Derain, Vlaminck, Marquet, and others. How this movement came about, and its influence on contemporary art, will be the subject of this program.

#5 - May 1st - "CUBISM"

Cubism was formulated before World War I. Stemming from Cezanne, it was the first 20th century revolution in formal structure; the angularities of Cubism found additional inspiration in the sharply-faceted surfaces of African sculpture. The leading innovators of Cubism were Picasso and Braque; their revolutionary concept of form and space influenced Futurism, Orphism, and Constructivism. The significance of the contributions of Cubism will be the subject of this program.
