FEITELSON ON ART: series, "ART OF THE 20TH CENTURY"

#8 - Sunday May [[strikethrough]] 22nd [[/strikethrough]] 29th - DE CHIRICO

Giorgio de Chirico, born in Greece of Italian parentage in 1888, made an early reputation as the "painter of the Enigma", and precursor of official Surrealism. He created a personal and unique style which was to have a world-wide influence. Since 1930 he has rejected his early [[strikethrough]] work [[/strikethrough]] ideals and devoted himself to a kind of painting resembling that of 17th century Italy.
However, his early work alone is considered his important contribution to contemporary art.

#9 - Sunday [[strikethrough]] May 29th [[/strikethrough]] JUNE 12th - MAX ERNST

Max Ernst, born in 1891 near Cologne, Germany, majored in philosophy at the University of Bonn. First influences on his art were the Expressionists, de Chirico, and Picasso. During World War I in Zurich he became one of the founders of "Dada"; later, one of the leading figures of the Surrealist group in Paris. He has not deviated from his Surreal ideals, and for many he remains the most important Surrealist painter and sculptor.
