FEITELSON ON ART: June 19th broadcast - MONET

ANNOUNCER: A painting by Claude Monet titled "Impression: Sunrise" inspired a Parisian journalist, in 1874, to coin the term "Impressionism" to describe this new kind of painting. Monet, the most important exponent of Impressionism, developed an unprecedented method of portraying every caprice of sunlight and mood of nature. The Impressionist approach to realism let to endless possibilities, unforeseen by its innovators - indeed, it opened the way for the Post-Impressionists, and is basically responsible for most of what we call modern art. Today Lorser Feitelson will discuss and critically evaluate Monet's personal concept of realism and his methods of expressing it.
