re: "Mannerists " Concept of Form

Style became known as the "maniers"... emerged about 1520, as a new, subjective concept of art - Poutormo, Rosso & Parmigianino, reacting against the accepted canvas of ideal, balanced beauty of the High Renaissance, developed intensely personal & eccentric styles.

The movement of which they were the leaders was characterized by a disregard for the natural in favor of arbitrary, asymmetric, and almost abstract treatment of figures in space -

The movement had its first expression in Florence about 1520 with Poutormo & Rosso & developed in Rome, where the latter met Parmigianino in 1524.

After the sack of Rome in 1527, and the dispersal of the artists, Parmigianino spread the style in Northern Italy & Rosso brought it to the Fontainebleau in France.
