excited by the first view of Chantry's statue in 1827 I could not forbear expressing my sentiments in some verses, which I shall no excuse for repeating because what they may want in Poetic Merit, is atoned for in Artistic & patriotic sentiment

Majestic form that from the unconcious Stone
Has risen into being and to fame!
Proud monument of Art! which not alone
The Hero's Image, but the Artist's name
Perpetuates to Gratitude, and swells
The consecrated Temple where it dwells

Already Grecian Portico's and Domes
Like sacred Rome, their grace & grandeur lend
To endear & decorate still more our homes;
And sculpture, guided to the noblest end,
Devote to one immortal object still,
Bestows Canova's, Houdon's, Chantry's skill.

Let Europe thus her willing homage send,
To stimulate Columbia's Patriot sons,
Whose artist, emulous of fame, contend
As Rivals in the race that Albion runs,
The sun of art, which glowed in Rome may rise
To greater splendour in our Western skies.
