The arts were but little patronized in France till they obtained a local habitation & a name in the Palaces of Francis the first & Lewis the 14th: use might we not have known such a magnificent Painter as Lebrun - 
Davinci's name had been for left honoured - and the great personages of that period had lived without a Rigaud to transmit them down to us. But the public taste soon degenerated into more scenic display & flimsy affection, till the venerable Painter Vien & his pupil David introduced

a more classic taste - at first too statue - like & cold - but now, under his numerous pupils, developing a great variety & amount of excellence. 
In England, where the gothic architecture at an early period assumed a picturesque character of great taste and beauty, painting was employed to decorate the alters & windows of the churches; yet they were chiefly valued for gorgeous & brilliant colours, and those for the curious m mixture of carving & painting; as may be perceived by a record of St. Mary's Church at Bristol, which runs thus. 

"Memorandum: That Master Cumings hath delivered the 14th day of July 1470, to W. Nicholas Bettes, Vicar of Radcliffe, Lewis Conteryn, Philip Bartholomew & John Brown, Procurators of Radcliffe aforesaid, a new Sepulcre, well gilt & cooer thereto; an image, that is to say, - Item a lath, made of timber, & iron work thereto. Item, thereto longeth heaven, made of timber & stained cloth. Item a hath, made of timber & iron-work, with devils, in number 13. Four Knights armed keeping the Sepulcre, with their weapons in their hands, that is to say, two aces & two spears.
