Notes of the Painting Room.
Preliminary Remarks.

During the lapse of more than half a Century, the knowledge which I have gradually acquired, in Europe and America, in 'the Art and Mystery of Painting,' has become of inestimable value, because it was not to be purchased with Money, and but little of it can be found in Books on the Art, which are generally Compilations, seldom made by professional Artists, but by persons who have had but little practice or experience and who have generally reprinted what they [[strikethrough]] could find relating to the subject [[/strikethrough]] have found in other Books, leaving it to the sagacity of the Student to discover their doubtful merits. Had those Treatises been founded on the experience & practice of the Masters in the Arts, whose paintings record their competency for such a task, but whose pens have been as idle as their pencils have been prolific of excellence, the instruction would have been of undoubted and precious Authority.
