without examination

xx Reliance must not always be had without examination on the pigments as ground by the Colourmen. It is often necessary to subject them to the artist's own glass & Mutler, when they are about to be used for fine purposes, until they lose their granular surface & become smooth and lustrous. Doubtless with the views of inducing attention to this particular, the old Italian Author Cenini, [[strikethrough]] [[recommend?]] [[/strikethrough]] , remarks that some Colours cannot be ground too much, extravagantly saying even for 10 or 20 years! Certainly they should be made as fine & smooth as the nature of the material will permit.
