72 Imitation of Tints.

The imitation of tints, either from the life, or in copying a Picture, by holding the tint on the Palette-knife in front of the part to be imitated, is extremely fallacious, owing to several circumstances. Being nearer the eye, it receives more light, and this, together with the light reflected through the colour from the polished surface of the steal, causes the tint [[crossed out]] the tint [[/crossed out]] to appear exactly right, when it is really too dark. This may be proved, (where you can take that liberty on a Varnished picture of your own, from which the fresh paint may be wiped off), by painting on the picture a portion of such a prepared tint, which will instantly show it to be too dark. Besides, the subsequent drying of the oil by the approximation of the colouring particles, the tint necessarily becomes still darker in time. This is especially the cafe with all colours that require much oil to grind them. And, finally, the varnish with which the painting is afterwards covered, inevitably becomes darker. From ? the copies which are usually + apparantly carefully made from the (underlined)Chief-d'Oeures(stop underline)of Italy, are always darker than the Originals; which also have become darker than when they proceeded from the hands of the master; they should, therefore, be copied a little lighter; or the originals placed in a (underline) brighter light (end underline) to be then imitated.

73 Roughnesses (centered)

(indent)All unnecessary roughness of paint it is best to remove as soon as the parts are so dry as not to rub up, + before they become hard, by ? the edge of an elastic sharp pallet-knife, held (underline) nearly (end underline)flat, on the surface of the picture, & moving it (underline)obliquel,(end underline), so as to cut off the super=(new line)=? ?. What paint remains will then dry the sooner + more perfectly, + ? admit the better of being repainted with as full a body of color as may be desired

74 (centered) Cleaning Glass + Muller

(Indented) Acetate of lead ground with Spirits of Turpentine cleans them perfectly, which the Turpentine alone cannot always do. (end of page)
