Dead Colouring

A rapid mode of dead colouring is this. After having made a drawing with lead pencils, or paint, that will not be obliterated by scumbling over it, with a large soft bristle brush spread over it, thinly, tints made of Burnt Siena & Naples yellow mixed, adding whites for the lightest tints. Then having made a tint with equal portions of Naples yellow & Black, place alongside of this some Vandyk Red, and with these tints, somewhat orange, green & purple, make out as much as you can of the forms, masses & shadows: and end this preparatory scumbling by the employment of a little Vermillion on the lips and cheeks.
