The author may retouch it himself, but such is the perfection to which this art of copying is carried, that generally he has nothing to do with it. The statues of Christ + the Apostles composed by the celebrated Thorwaldsen in Rome for the King of Denmark __?__ finished by the workmen of Carrana without having received a single touch from the hand of T. who did not even see them for 5 yrs. after they were erected in Copenhagen.

On the ductile clay the artist impresses the first precious thought of his creation with this humble material. Day by days, + often at night by the scrutinizing lamplights, [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] he realizes the perfection of form + when he can no longer press its yielding surface to greater truth + finish, it is given over to others to be copied in marble or cast in bronze. It may then become the permanent object of general admiration, but the stonecutter, the molden + the brass founder, whose names are seldom [[strikethrough]] known [[/strikethrough]] mentioned, are also entitled to a full share of credit which they never receive.

It is a curious fact that, with the exception of Michaelangelo who was equally excellent in pntg + sculpture, the most eminent sculptors have been most generally deficient in pntg. Whilst on the contrary, the most distinguished pntrs
