July 9
Mrs. Edmund C. Evans
Edgartown, Mass.

My dear Mr Carlen: I am so distressed to learn of Horace Pippin's death. I want to send my deepest sympathy for I know what a shock this will be to you. Your consolation will be that you more than anyone else enabled him to achieve the fame he so richly deserved. He was an unique personality and not only a great artist but a great man as well.
