CARNEGIE-INSTITUTE DEPARTMENT-OF-FINE-ARTS PITTSBURGH - PENNSYLVANIA HOMER-SAINT-GAUDENS DIRECTOR February 23, 1940 Mr. Robert Carlen Carlen Galleries 323 South 16th Street Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Dear Mr. Carlen: Mr. Saint-Gaudens is out of the city, and will not return for some time. In his absence I have your letter to him of February 21, which he will see upon his return. In the meantime I can tell you that although the Survey of American Painting which the Department of Fine Arts plans for next fall will be limited to our native art, it will contain works representative of the periods from the very beginning down to the present day. Consequently the contemporary section will be small, and all the artists in it directly invited to contribute. I am sorry to say there will be no opportunity for Mr. Pippin's work to be submitted for consideration. Sincerely yours, Dorothy Glassburn Secretary International Exhibition
