Dear Mr. Carlen:

Many thanks for your letter. I am exceedingly sorry that I did not receive yours sent in care of the Downtown Galleries, and I am sorry too that I missed the opportunity to visit Dr. Barnes' collection again. I remember with such vivid pleasure the afternoon I spent there some years ago. There is no need to tell you how intensely interested I am in the sort of material he has collected with such rare discrimination, and what a great pleasure it was to spend some hours there in almost isolation which permitted the sort of study one seldom has occasion to make. The only difficulty was that there is much too much to see and to take in properly in so brief a period.

Shall we definitely place the Pippin show from April 14 through May 10? When I talked over the telephone we had agreed that the show would consist of between nineteen and twenty examples. If it were twenty-one or twenty-two, of course that would be in order also. We shall, of course, pay the crating expenses, but ask you in accordance with the times to hold them to the most modest sum possible consonant with complete safety, naturally. Also, if you will send us the valuation, we will cover under our policy in transit, and during exhibition here. The paintings should, accordingly, be shipped to us Express collect, at the valuation of $50. per box declared to the Express company, as our policy takes care of the remaining value, and is even safer since collection is much simpler and more satisfactory than through the Express Company.

Should you wish to borrow a painting from the Whitney Museum - which I think indeed it is very much in order to
