Dear Mr. Carlen:

As I informed you on the telephone, VOGUE has been having great technical difficulties with the Pippin job. In making arrangements for the enlargement, they discovered that the cost would represent one thousand dollars. This sum seemed pretty much out of proportion to the cost of the work of the artist. However, it seems that scenic painters have specific charges and the technicalities call for two separate sets. Rawlings was in and discussed it with me and yesterday they decided to give up the idea. The three artists who were previously used for similar jobs, did their own back-drop and no one at VOGUE realized the cost of having this work done commercially. However, they plan to use the Pippin painting in color reproduction as an introduction to their cotten festival lay-out. In the long run it will serve the same purpose for Pippin, who will receive the $200 plus expenses. Will you make up a bill for the latter and send it to me.

The painting will of course be available for the exhibition. Rhode Island is shipping in time and the Phillips' has already arrived. Thus, I think it would be advisable to get down all the new pictures as soon as possible so that they may be photographed and the publicity may be released. It will not be necessary for Pippin to come in and perhaps he can complete another picture in time for the show. I can't wait to see the new group. I hope that you and Pippin will not be disappointed about the VOGUE business, but the color reproduction will be just as affective.

Sincerely yours
Edith Halpert
