American Artist 330 WEST 42nd STREET, NEW YORK January 31, 1945 Mr. Horace Pippin c/o Downtown Galleries 43 East 51st Street New York 22, N. Y. Dear Mr. Pippin: In the April number of American Artist we are printing a number of color plates from the paintings purchased by Encyclopedia Britannica. Yours is among them, and I am writing to ask if you will give me a little information about your picture. Evidently it is based upon some story or a conception which I am sure our readers would like to understand. Won't you write and tell me what the picture means as a whole, referring to the various details - including those interesting figures in the background and the crosses between the tree trunks? I'm very happy to be able to reproduce a specimen of your work. I know our readers will be glad to get acquainted with you in this way. Cordially yours, Ernest W. Watson Ernest W.
